Western Java Singaparna Popular Resistance Against Japan

The bojsingaparistic people of West Java against the Japanese  in the midst of colonialism is certainly the most difficult time for the Indonesian nation, although the struggle never ends. This fight is certainly one of the biggest battles in Indonesia, trying to repel the invaders.

During the colonial period, of course, the colonizers did various things that  made the Indonesian people unhappy and tortured. Therefore, various efforts have been made to be able to purchase the well-being and independence of the community, especially in the West Java region. Surely this is also done with the support of the various parties in it.

There was an important figure that later appeared in the case of the resistance of the inhabitants of West Java Singaparna against the Japanese . With his leadership, more and more people joined forces to digest and suppress the various unkind attitudes of the invaders, in this case the Japanese at that time.

Denial of movements that provoke battles

When Japan began to control Indonesian territory, it not only created its power, but its different cultures were brought in to influence the people. Surely you have also heard or read about it. One of the cultures that Japan is also trying to instill is to pay tribute to its flag.

Not only that, Japan also tried to get the Indonesian people to sing their national anthem. Including a sun-oriented greeting in honor of the Japanese emperor or referred to as seikerei. Basically, in a religion believed by the Japanese, bowing to the sun is a form of reverence for the sun god.

The Indonesian people opposed it and rejected it, becoming one of the causes of the resistance of the inhabitants of West Java Singaparna against the Japanese at that time. It is certain that many existing scholars also oppose the existence of seikerei, since it is also similar to the prayer movement. This further obscures the hot atmosphere at the time and causes more problems between Japan and Indonesia.

There are many eminent clerics who oppose the existence of this movement and urge their troops to fight the adversary’s army. Of course, this happened in defense of independence and did not want to do what is the religious beliefs of the Japanese people. However, because it is so stressed, the invasion army  will consider anyone who does not want to do so as a dissident and deserves to be punished.

The resistance of the people of Singaparna to Japanese politics

One of the clerics who rejected the seikerei movement at that time was KH Zainal Mustafa. He and all his students Pesantren Sukamanah unequivocally refused to do this and provoked  resistance  from the inhabitants of West Java Singaparna against the Japanese. This includes claiming that for Muslims to do seikerei, it is an avoidance of the act and should be avoided.

Of course, KH Zainal Mustafa did not remain silent and watched as the Japanese tortured anyone who rejected the movement. He began to plan to increase his strength so that he could properly rebel against the Japanese forces. Soldiers from students in pesantren were deployed to fight the enemy.

Initially, before there was a resistance among the  inhabitants of  West Java Singaparna against the Japanese, the invaders sent their people to hold talks with KH Zainal Mustafa for understanding. However, it turned out that in the end the Japanese envoy was actually killed and angered the invaders, so they decided to use a more difficult method.

Until finally, the resistance of the inhabitants of Singaparna West Java to the Japanese was no longer inevitable. Although the number of soldiers is certainly very lost so that the adversary’s army can cope with the resistance. There were so many pesantren soldiers who were detained by the Japanese and sentenced to death for being dissidents and disobeying their orders.

Singaparna people who are anti-colonial policies

The people themselves in the Singaparna area are, in fact, people who tend to be religious. So that the different policies of the colonizers are really very opposed, especially with the different atrocities that have been committed. This is very much at odds with the religious understanding adopted by the majority of Singaparna’s population, namely Islam.

One of the obstacles to the resistance of the inhabitants of West Java Singaparna to the Japanese was the large number of people who died at that time as a result of forced labor. Similarly, all Japanese behavior seems inhumane. They have the heart to do everything in their power to punish anyone who does not want to obey what has been ordered and is considered a rebel.

In addition, the Japanese side is adopting more and more policies, and there is no reason to reject them. This policy is considered to be contrary to religious teachings and coercive in nature. This causes people to live unhappy lives and not have the freedom to do according to the teachings of their religion.

The struggle of the resistance of the inhabitants of West Java Singaparna against the Japanese took place in the village of Sukamanah for about an hour. Soldiers led by KH Zainal Mustafa carried swords and showed bamboo as weapons. In addition to students, there are also combinations, there are also units from Kempetai, Garut and Tasikmalaya. They all came together to resist the arbitrary Japanese colonization, although in the end they had to lose.

Getting to know the character of KH Zainal Mustafa

KH Zainal Mustafa, or who was known as Umri or Hudaemi in childhood, was actually an ordinary person. He studied at the Islamic boarding school Gunung Pari and changed places as a wandering student. This, of course, is done in order to obtain deeper religious knowledge from different kinds of teachers and scholars.

After studying at several Islamic boarding schools in West Java and because of his intelligence, Umri was appointed assistant to Kyai Muttaqien. Umri has noble ambitions to found and manage his own pesantren. Only finally this dream took place in the area of Baguer Village, Singaparna. Of course, this is the story before the resistance of the inhabitants of West Java Singaparna against the Japanese.

Umri then changed his name to KH Zainal Mustafa after the performance of hajj in 1937. He undertook to learn Arabic as the main thing to learn, to make it easier for him to understand the sciences of religion. However, in his Islamic boarding school, he also taught material on Indonesian history and the defense of the Fatherland.

The existence of this material caused KH Zainal Mustafa to be under the surveillance of intelligence from the Dutch colonizers. Even then, he was also imprisoned by the Netherlands. This happened, of course, because of his criticism of the policies of the colonizers, which at that time were considered contrary to religious teachings and inhumane.

He continued to do everything in his power to defend his religion and people. Oppose any policy of the invaders until the Japanese arrived in Indonesia. His love for his homeland is unquestionable. Many of his services as a national hero were performed, which took place and had a great influence on the struggle of the Indonesian people.

Indeed, the struggle of the inhabitants of Singaparna must end in defeat. But also in other areas there was great resistance to the completion of the policies of the colonizers, which were not suitable for the well-being of the people. Indeed, starting with the  resistance of the people  of West Java Singaparna to the Japanese, the  struggle of the Indonesian people was so extraordinary as to defend their independence.
